Two runoff elections will be held on January 5, 2021, to decide which party will control the United States Senate.
Republican Senator David Perdue faces Democrat Jon Ossoff in one race. Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler faces Democrat Raphael Warnock in the second.
The stakes are high. Do your homework, check the record of the candidates who are currently serving in the Senate (Perdue and Loeffler). Have they done the job they were elected to do? Have they earned the privilege of returning to Congress?
Learn about the new candidates. Examine their platforms and decide how they propose to represent all constituents from Georgia. Do they deserve the opportunity to represent you in Congress?
Redistricting affects political power. It determines which party controls Congress and state and local governments across the country. A good redistricting process will be open and transparent, allowing communities to ask questions and give input. This participation is important, since communities are the basic units of well-designed districts.
There is a systemic breakdown in the electoral process, including issues with registration, ballot access, and vote counting. Voter suppression is about controlling access to the ballot box, and subsequently, the outcome of elections. Design flaws and outright fraud are implicated in voter supression, as are Supreme Court, State Supreme Courts and Appellate Courts decisions that undermine the voting process.
The voting process is in crisis, controlled by majority leaders who lack the political will to create or agree to solutions in the public interest. The will of the people continues to be ignored.
The voting equipment now in use is aging — has not kept up with technological change. Resources for citizen participation have been severely impacted by the state of the economy and shortages of both equipment and human resources are likely. When casting a ballot, it is patently unfair that once you get to the ballot box, that the voting equipment fails you.
Today’s political climate is riven with discontent and mistrust of the institutions of government. Mistrust in lawmakers or institutions may be nearly endemic, but we still rely on the principle that elected officials can be voted out — it is how the concept of ‘term limits’ plays out each year. It is of critical importance that we safeguard that most fundamental part of who we are as Americans – our democracy – by ensuring voting systems work properly and fairly for all; that it is possible for those responsible for supervising our elections process to demonstrate to the public that their votes indeed are being captured and counted as they intended, and that the outcomes are correct.
